What is FIP?

The First-Year International Program (FIP) is a pre-orientation program for international students and US residents who have lived and studied primarily overseas, or just want to embrace the international spirit at Harvard! Partnering with the Office of International Education at Harvard, over 40 student leaders mentor over 180 incoming first years, introducing them to life at Harvard and the United States more broadly.

What do you do in FIP? And how is it structured?

All incoming first years, called FIPpers, alongside about 10-12 of their first year peers are grouped into FIP “families'' led by 2-3 FIP leaders (upper-level student mentors). FIP participants receive foundational information for a happy, and successful start at Harvard, including sessions and discussions about American culture, immigration, and academics in the US and at Harvard. FIP participants are able to set up a bank account and cell phone service alongside receiving logistical support necessary for a smooth start at Harvard. FIP activities include fun social activities, FIP, panels focusing various aspects of college life, introductions to student support offices, and much more!

Through its emphasis on inclusion and belonging, FIP families live up to their names and create an environment like home for many students at Harvard. FIP is known for creating long-lasting friendships while cultivating the larger international community at Harvard.

Will FIP programming interfere with the First-Year Orientation?

First-Year Orientation orientation starts after pre-orientation programs conclude.

How do I meet other international first-years outside of my FIP family?

Throughout FIP, you will have many opportunities, both structured and unstructured, to meet your international peers! FIP will involve a variety of social activities that help you adjust to life at Harvard, explore Boston, and get to know the rest of your FIP cohort as well as the over 40 FIP leaders.

I have a question that I'd like to ask anonymously. Where can I ask it?

We have an anonymous Google Form that can be accessed throughout FIP where you can ask about anything and everything! Towards the end of FIP, we also host a Leader Q&A session where all of these questions will be answered by our amazing upper-level FIP leaders.

Do I have to stay with the family I'm assigned to for the entirety of FIP?

Yes, we assign you to families because we want you to have a smaller, tight-knit group of internationals that you feel close to and form genuine connections with over an extended period. FIP families often become friends for life! There are also many opportunities to get to know other first-year students outside your FIP family in FIP-wide events and social activities.

Do I move into my first-year dorm during FIP?

Yes! You will be moving into your first-year residence before FIP programming begins. Be sure to pack for your entire year at Harvard! We look forward to seeing you there.

Is there a timeline for applying for FIP and after?

The pre-orientation application process and timeline is outlined here.
